The mainland,
brought to you.

One neighbour’s trip, everyone’s errands.

A crossing from the mainland to the island A line of dots runs from a dark mainland point to an amber island point.

Living on Gambier, a bag of groceries means a boat, a car, a round-trip to the mainland, and half a day gone. Hopit is a simple way for neighbours to share that trip. Someone who’s already crossing to the mainland picks up what the island needs and brings it back, and everyone who joins in splits the cost, the way you’d share a taxi. Ten separate trips for the same groceries become one.

Ten trips become one.

Ten families, ten boats, ten cars, ten round-trips to the mainland, for the same groceries. Pool them into one crossing and the waste mostly disappears. Now picture an island of hundreds still doing it the old way. The savings aren’t a slogan; they’re arithmetic.

For households

How it works

  1. Add your order in the app.

You’ll get the Hopit app when you join. Open it and add what you need before the trip’s cut-off, no minimum order.

  2. Neighbours add theirs.

Your order joins everyone else’s heading out on the same trip. The more homes that come in, the smaller each one’s share of the cost.

  3. A neighbour makes the trip.

Someone already crossing to the mainland that day shops the orders and brings them back. Your groceries arrive at your dock or door, often the same day.

For neighbours who help out

You’re already going.

Most people here will do both, some weeks you send an order, some weeks you make the trip for others.

You already cross to the mainland.

You’re making the trip anyway. Bring back a few neighbours’ groceries on the same crossing and get paid for it, so the trip finally covers itself.

You service homes out here.

Plumber, electrician, cleaner, handyman. Getting to the island is half the job. Hopit lines your visit up with a scheduled trip and settles the scope and price up front, so you know the trip’s worth it and the household knows the cost before you start.

You’re already driving the Saturday grocery run.

You’ve got room in the back and you’re already going. Pick up a few neighbours’ orders on the same trip and cover your gas, and then some.

An island looking out for itself.

Instead of everyone making the same trip alone, neighbours pitch in for each other. A trip can run as a relay: someone on the mainland gathers the order and sends it across on the sea taxi, and a neighbour already heading to Sea Ranch brings it the last stretch. Each leg gets claimed before the cut-off, so no one sails or drives just for errands, and the groceries still get home.

Paying for it

How you pay.

During the pilot it’s simple. You get your groceries, then we email you a clear, itemized bill covering your items plus your share of the trip, and you pay it by Interac e-Transfer, the same bank transfer most people on the coast already use.

If a bill ever looks off, it’s easy to sort out, a quick message and we make it right. No accounts to set up, nothing locked in.

Cheaper the more who join.

A trip costs about the same whether one home or six are on it, so the more neighbours who come in, the less each one pays. Sharing the ride is what makes it cheap.

The pilot

What’s happening now.

Hopit is just getting started, right here on Gambier. The idea is simple: a couple of times a week, your groceries make the crossing from the mainland, and everyone who’s in splits the trip. We’re inviting every home at Sea Ranch to try it.

It’s run by a neighbour, it’s free to join, and it grows as more people come aboard. Try it for a few trips and see if it makes island life a little easier.
